WHAT IS KARATE

Karate is a mental and physical art founded on scientific principles of body movement for health, self-defense and character development. Part exercise.. Part self defense-part sport..part ritual--this is the intriguing complexity of Karate. While relatively new to the western world, it is the oldest and most devastating form of unarmed self-defense ever developed. In modem times, it has taken on aspects of a major sport. It is this unique combination of self-defense and sport, which has created a wave of enthusiasm throughout the United States. Through centuries of development, punches, kicks, and blocks have been perfected to a highly perfected art form. Karate teaches how to overcome an opponent through the highly skilled use of hands, feet, knees, and elbows. The technique of an expert is swift, precise, and powerful. The practice of Karate is accompanied by a centuries old ritual of formalities which precede lessens, demonstrations, and practice. These symbolize the mutual respect with which Karateka regard each other, and their art. The progression of the development of Karate appears to have been from India to China, with several great men of different centuries are given the credit. Adopted from the Chinese by the Okinawans more than 500 years ago, the techniques were developed and guarded with great secrecy. It was not until this century that Karate was rediscovered and introduced into Japan in 1916 as a sport. In the short time Karate has been practiced in the United States, its development has been rapid. Today, as one of our fastest growing sports. it is coming into it's own in both colleges and professional circles.
